San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk was extra emotional during media availability on Tuesday following his team's Super Bowl LVIII loss to the Kansas City Chiefs.
Aiyuk was able to hold it together before the tears fell when one reporter asked him what he would remember most about this particular roster and this past season.
After a long pause, Aiyuk said, "Just guys that came in and worked to be champions every single day."
Reporters gave Aiyuk a moment to gather himself and then he asked him if this was the hardest post-season run that he had ever experienced.
Aiyuk shook his head as if he were saying "yes."
“That’s all I got,” he said and walked away.
The Niners' Super Bowl might not be the only reason Aiyuk struggled to hold back his emotions.
The former 2020 first-round draft pick is heading into the fifth and final year of his rookie contract and will be looking for more than the $14.1 million base salary he’s due in 2024. If he and the 49ers can't come to terms on a lucrative contract extension, then he may have just played his last snap with this tight-knit San Francisco team.
Aiyuk has played a large role in the 49ers' success in recent years and set a new career high in 2023 with 1,342 receiving yards on 75 catches and seven touchdowns.
The Niners would be crazy to let him get away.
