A Kansas City Chiefs defender sent a passionate message to the public on Wednesday afternoon after shots were fired near the Super Bowl LVIII Rally and Parade at Union Station in downtown Kansas City.
Linebacker Drue Tranquill asked for everyone to pray for the victims of "this heinous act."
"Pray that doctors & first responders would have steady hands & that all would experience full healing," Tranquill wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter.
Kansas City Police first reported that shots were fired around Union Station at 3:02 p.m., advising everyone to leave the area.
Both the police department and other law enforcement officials released some updates a few minutes after the initial announcement.
"Officers are working to clear Union Station itself. We will release everyone inside the building once that is complete. We are still trying to determine the number of shooting victims.
We are releasing everyone from inside Union Station.
Shots were fired west of Union Station near the garage and multiple people were struck. We took two armed people into custody for more investigation.
Anyone nearby needs to leave the area as quickly and safely as possible to facilitate treatment of the shooting victims. Please avoid the Union Station parking garage area to allow first responders through.
We request witnesses to the shooting to please go to the southwest corner of Pershing and Main.
Remember the child reunification stations in the area are at 2301 Main and inside the main entrance of Union Station. We still have several needing reunification. Contact the officer nearest you for reunification information."
