The Super Bowl LVIII matchup between the Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will include a couple of former Tennessee Vols players that used to be teammates in Knoxville.
Former Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith is a starting guard for the Chiefs while former Tennessee wide receiver Jauan Jennings is a key wide receiver for the 49ers.
Smith and Jennings were teammates at Tennessee from 2017 to 2019.
On Monday night, the opening night of Super Bowl week, Smith sent a message to Jennings and Vols fans.
"Vol nation, go Vols, that's it, keep it simple," said Smith when asked if he had a message for Tennessee fans. "We're keeping the streak with Volunteers in the Super Bowl. My man Jauan Jennings on the other side of it. Best of luck to you brother. I remember playing numerous games with him. So you know Vol nation, love you, thank you for the support. GBO, baby."
Smith is wrapping up his third season in the NFL. He's advanced to the AFC Championship game in each of his three professional seasons. This is his second trip to the Super Bowl after winning his first championship with the Chiefs last season.
Jennings, meanwhile, is making his first trip to the Super Bowl after making it to the NFC Championship game the last two seasons. He'll be playing in his ninth career postseason game on Sunday night after being selected by the 49ers in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Smith and Jennings both played at Tennessee during a time when the Vols weren't finding much success. It's great to see them both getting a chance to shine on football's biggest stage.
