Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes has evolved his game from being downright reckless in college to being capable of managing a game with the best of them.
But just because he's playing efficiently, doesn't mean he's lost his explosive touch on the ball.
NFL Media's Peter Schrager knows that, and he predicts we see another example of it in Super Bowl LVIII:
Mahomes Behind The Back Pass?
"Over the years we have become accustomed to expecting the unexpected from Patrick Mahomes," said Schrager during Wednesday's episode of GMFB on NFL Network. "So many people have told me that he [Mahomes] can complete a behind-the-back pass. So Patrick what better time than now? This is the game, this is the weekend, Mahomes, please attempt the behind-the-back pass."
Now the "White Whale" that Scharger was speaking of has actually been seen in the wild. This past summer, in a set of team drills, Mahomes decided to spice up a training camp practice when he attempted and completed a behind-the-back pass to wide receiver Skyy Moore.
In fairness, that was only practice, and a light one at that. Not the biggest stage, brightest lights, and with a shot at immortality on the line, seeing as Mahomes will transcend to athletic greatness that rivals players far beyond the National Football League with a win on Sunday.
So I would say it's wishful thinking from Schrager. Chiefs fans are going to be stressed enough while watching the team, making a behind-the-back pass the last thing they need.
But should Mahomes pull it off, and hoist yet another Lombardi, it will be a game never forgotten.
"The behind-the-back Super Bowl."
That has a nice ring to it. We'll see if Mahomes calls his shot.
