The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a player who spent some time on the practice squad in 2023.

In addition to their signing of former Buffalo Bills P Matt Araiza, the Chiefs announced that they had re-signed S Tyree Gillespie on Thursday. Gillespie was originally signed to the practice squad on Dec. 5 shortly after Bryan Cook suffered a serious ankle injury in the Week 13 loss to the Packers.

Gillespie was released after exactly a month to make room for former Detroit Lions DT Isaiah Buggs on the practice squad.

Here's a bit of what we wrote on Gillespie after he first joined the team back in December:

Gillespie was a fourth-round draft pick in the 2021 NFL draft and a teammate of Chiefs LB Nick Bolton, who was a second-round pick in the same draft class. The University of Missouri product spent a single season with the Las Vegas Raiders and has since spent time with the Tennessee Titans, Jacksonville Jaguars, and Houston Texans. He was waived/injured by the Texans back in August. Gillespie hasn't played much during his NFL career with just eight career tackles since he entered the league in 2021.

Gillespie ran a 4.41 40-yard dash ahead of the 2021 NFL draft at the Missouri Pro Day. That speed will be intriguing for the likes of both special teams coordinator Dave Toub and defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo. That doesn't necessarily mean that Gillespie will earn playing time in short order.

Gillespie's time on the practice squad will give him a jump start compared to some of the newcomers the Chiefs have signed this offseason. He could well earn himself a position as a depth piece for the team in 2024.

The Chiefs are now up to 55 players on the 90-man roster for the 2024 NFL offseason.
