The New Orleans Saints are going to have plenty of options in late April. The 2024 NFL Draft is going to be vital for their success in the next couple of seasons, and the class is an impressive one. One of their potential picks in the first round got some bad news this week, though.
Illinois star defensive lineman Johnny Newton underwent surgery in January. He won't work out at the Scouting Combine, but he should be ready for his pro day, according to Dane Brugler.
The Saints need improved play on the DL. The need for another edge rusher is bigger than on the interior, but Newton could be the best defensive lineman on the board when they come onto the clock.
Now, the situation becomes a bit cloudier.
New Orleans, along with many other teams, will have a close eye on Newton's potential return to the field in April.
As a redshirt junior Newton led Illinois in quarterback hurries (nine), tackles for loss (8.5), sacks (7.5) — tied for second among Big Ten players — while leading all Power Five defensive linemen in both pressures (44) and snaps (749). Newton also led the nation with an Illinois-record four blocked kicks this season. — 247 Sports
Newton is a player that is still expected to go in the first round, but the injury could raise some eyebrows. Only time will tell. Regardless, the Saints need to address this defensive line during this offseason.
