The Carolina Panthers have landed on their new head coach and the hope is that he can develop QB Bryce Young into being the player they believe that they drafted at No. 1 overall.
Dave Canales could be the guy for the job, after all, he did help Baker Mayfield turn his career around with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2023. Weirdly enough though, the Panthers are going to be paying multiple head coaches next season.
Currently, the Panthers have three head coaches under contract. Matt Rhule is set through 2026, while Frank Reich will be paid through the same time in 2026. Canales' first contract with the Panthers is through 2029.
Just like Rhule, the Panthers opted to give Canales a six-year contract to be the head coach. Such contracts are not given to first-time head coaches like Canales often for obvious reasons. Canales may end up being great for the Panthers, but they’re locked into paying for over a half-decade even if he falls on his face 15 games into his first season.
Having three coaches under contract symbolizes what the Tepper era has been for Carolina. There have been plenty of losses and a few head coaches already since Tepper took over the team in 2018. The franchise has a record of 31-68 since then.
Rhule coached the Panthers for three seasons (2020-2022) before he was fired and eventually went to Nebraska. Reich was a one-and-done with the Panthers.
What Carolina needs to do is really simple
Things could be ugly for a bit with Canales, due to the current roster. But the Panthers would be wise to let it ride out at least a couple of seasons to give it a chance and get the other coaches off of their books.
Panthers show just how confident they are in new head coach
After bad hires, the Carolina Panthers believe Dave Canales is the answer to their problems.
