The Green Bay Packers are losing a member of their coaching staff. Senior analyst Tim Lester, a former Western Michigan head coach, is leaving the Packers to take over as the Iowa offensive coordinator. The news was initially reported by 247 Sports.
Lester is the first coach this season who opted to leave the Packers, and the third coaching staff change. Prior, defensive coordinator Joe Barry and strength and conditioning coordinator Chris Gizzi had been fired by head coach Matt LaFleur.
Tim Lester has a long track record as a college offensive coach. He was fired by Western Michigan in 2022 after six seasons with the team and came aboard with the Packers as a senior analyst to work with the defense, giving the defensive staff an offensive perspective.
That's something Matt LaFleur likes to do. Lester stayed one year in Green Bay, but in 2022, John Donovan was a senior analyst with the defense. Donovan also spent a season with the Packers after two years as an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Washington. Now, he's a senior offensive analyst at Florida.
In 2022, the Packers also brought in Aubrey Pleasant after he had been fired as the Detroit Lions defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator. In Green Bay, he worked as a senior analyst for the offense — with the same intention to add a different perspective. This year, he left to be the Los Angeles Rams' defensive backs coach and pass game coordinator.
New coaching staff
The Packers haven't made any changes to the staff on offense and special teams. On defense, Barry was the only one fired — it's unclear who they will keep or not among the position coaches, but this is something that will be defined after the defensive coordinator is hired.
And don't be surprised if Matt LaFleur picks up experienced coaches to be analysts once again.
