Kansas City Chiefs DL Charles Omenihu has been a big part of the defensive success during the team's run to Super Bowl LVIII. He recorded a tackle, sack, and forced fumble during the 17-10 win over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship Game, but the success came at a price.
During the game, Omenihu's knee buckled. He was helped to the sideline by the training staff where he was quickly examined and ruled questionable to return to the game. After halftime, the team ruled Omenihu out for the remainder of the game. The decision had fans in the Chiefs Kingdom fearing the worst about the productive defensive lineman.
Chiefs HC Andy Reid didn't have his typical postgame injury updates due to the celebration. Omenihu, however, was spotted by local media members in the locker room and walking around on the field after the game. That's probably something that wouldn't happen if he had a significant knee injury.
Asked about his injury, Omenihu assured KSHB-TV's Aaron Ladd that he would play in the Super Bowl.
"This is what I came here for, to make big plays, help the team win," Omenihu said. "I'm going to be good. No, I'm not done. I'm playing. I'm straight. We are good."
"You're playing in Super Bowl 58," Ladd asked.
"Yes, yes," Omenihu said. "Do I look like somebody who is not going to be playing in the Super Bowl? No, I don't, we're good."
The Chiefs' training staff will have some say in that after they return to Kansas City and get his knee tested. NFL Network's James Palmer reports that he will have an MRI on Monday. That said, the early confidence from Omenihu should reassure fans that he avoided the worst possible outcome, which is torn ligaments in his knee.
He sure doesn't look like someone who won't be playing in the Super Bowl.
