With Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas a week and a half away, the Kansas City Chiefs are preparing for the San Francisco 49ers and hoping they can get as healthy as possible. And, for the most part, they can.
In the divisional round of the 2023 playoffs, the Chiefs' best offensive lineman, Joe Thuney, went out with an injury against the Buffalo Bills. He missed last week as Nick Allegretti filled in for him, and now the question is if Thuney can play in the Super Bowl.
Thuney is dealing with a pectoral injury, which is difficult to play through. Regarding playing on February 11, head coach Andy Reid gave an update on his potential status, after we have already heard Thuney has received several different opinions on his injury.
"He's making progress," Reid said on Thursday. "He's not counted out."
While Thuney was out on Sunday, Allegretti stepped in and played about as phenomenal a game as a backup can against one of the best defenses in the league in the Baltimore Ravens.
Now, the Chiefs are hoping they don't have a similar situation as Super Bowl 55, which saw a ton of injury issues heading into the big game, ultimately becoming the prime reason the Buccaneers blew them out.
Both instances contain potential back-to-back scenarios, and both instances contain pretty significant injuries up front. However, that season, the Chiefs sustained multiple injuries to their offensive line.
The Chiefs can certainly operate against the 49ers without Thuney; however, he is one of the best offensive guards in football for a reason. The 49ers have the best defensive line in all of football, so you would like to have your best guys available to play your best football. This is certainly a major storyline to monitor.
Chiefs All-Pro received varying opinions on injury prognosis
The Kansas City Chiefs could be without All-Pro left guard Joe Thuney for Super Bowl LVIII if the team advances to the big game.
