The Las Vegas Raiders failed to grab Kliff Kingsbury, the former Arizona Cardinals head coach, as their offensive coordinator after nearly reaching an agreement last week
The deal was almost done, according to multiple reporters around the league. Then, all of a sudden, everything fell through. The news broke that Kingsbury withdrew his name from the job, and hours later, he ended up taking the Washington Commanders' open OC job under Dan Quinn
The Raiders ended up finding their offensive coordinator in Luke Getsy, the former Chicago Bears offensive coordinator. However, questions are still being raised about what happened between the Raiders and Kingsbury. One NFL insider revealed what went down.
"In simple terms, Las Vegas' unwillingness to go to a third year on Kliff Kingsbury's contract opened the door for other teams to swoop in—which the Commanders did right away, agreeing to terms with the former Cardinals and Texas Tech head coach Sunday." – Albert Breer, Sports Illustrated
The Raiders were very close, but that small issue is what kept Kingsbury from joining the Raiders. Peter Schrager of NFL Network has sources close to the situation, and Monday morning on Good Morning Football, he hinted that the fallout was not over money, as that is not an issue with Kingsbury as the Cardinals are still paying him.
Now, I get the notion that Kingsbury wanted more security with the job. The Raiders may have signed Getsy to a two-year deal, and that may be all they wanted out of an offensive coordinator. It's definitely something to ponder.
