The New Orleans Saints lost an important season last year. Defensive assistant Ryan Nielsen became the Atlanta Falcons defensive coordinator under Arthur Smith. With Smith's recent firing, Nielsen became available.
Nielsen was named the new defensive coordinator for the Jacksonville Jaguars on Monday.
Nielsen spent six years with the Saints to begin his NFL coaching career. At 44 years old, he's still got plenty of gas in the tank when it comes to coaching time. He's very well-respected in NFL circles.
He was the defensive line coach for the first four seasons of his New Orleans tenure. Then, he was promoted to assistant head coach/DL coach in 2021. He was named co-defensive coordinator/DL coach in 2022.
In 2023, the Falcons finished No. 11 in yards allowed and No. 18 in points allowed. Those were solid numbers, considering the talent on the roster.
He'll get a new opportunity in the AFC to lead a defense.
