The San Francisco 49ers are very used to facing the Green Bay Packers in the playoffs, and the two teams will make history when they face off in the Divisional Round on Saturday.

Green Bay booked a meeting with the Niners as the Packers pulled off a shock upset of the Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card round.

The Packers routed the Cowboys 48-32, a scoreline that flattered Dallas after their points total was massaged in extended garbage time, to ensure they will renew acquaintances with San Francisco.

A common fixture of the playoffs in the 1990s, the 49ers have dominated playoff matchups with the Packers in the modern era, beating them three times in the postseason in the 2010s before stunning Green Bay on the road in the Divisional Round at the end of the 2021 season. 

That most recent encounter was the ninth between the Niners and Packers in the playoffs.

By reaching double figures on Saturday, 49ers-Packers will become the most common playoff matchup in NFL history, breaking a four-way tie. Three other matchups (49ers vs. Cowboys; Rams vs. Cowboys; Packers vs. Cowboys) have each occurred nine times.

The last time they met in the playoffs, the Packers were the one seed that ultimately failed to handle the burden of expectation.

It is now the Niners who have all the pressure on their shoulders against a fearless and potent Packers team with nothing to lose. The latest edition of this rivalry is already historic, but the challenge for the Niners is to make sure it is not remembered for the wrong reasons.
