The Los Angeles Chargers' first major personnel hire since landing new head coach Jim Harbaugh comes from the team that's coached by Jim's brother, John.
Per multiple reports, the Chargers are hiring Baltimore Ravens director of player personnel Joe Hortiz as their new general manager. Hortiz replaces Tom Telesco, who held the position for a decade.
Hortiz's career in NFL personnel has been entirely with Baltimore. He joined the franchise as a personnel assistant all the way back in 1998. Since then he's risen the ranks from a pro scout all the way to becoming the director of player personnel in 2019.
Since John Harbaugh took over in 2008, Hortiz had a prominent role in building the Ravens on a yearly basis. Hortiz took Eric DeCosta's role as director of college scouting in 2009. When DeCosta was promoted again to GM, Hortiz took over as director of player personnel.
Both Hortiz and DeCosta have been with Ravens for their two Super Bowl championships and their ongoing run as one of the best drafting teams in the NFL. The Chargers obviously couldn't steal DeCosta, so they took his potential successor.
Jim being John's brother created the clear connection for Hortiz to take on this new opportunity to best rebuild the Chargers. There are plenty of salary cap and roster issues to tackle, and Los Angeles picked one of the best candidates for the task at hand.
