Baker Mayfield's remarkable turnaround season in 2023 now has another description for it: Pro Bowl.
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced Mayfield and LT Tristan Wirfs have been named to the Pro Bowl roster on Tuesday as replacement players. Per the team's release, Mayfield is replacing Dallas Cowboys QB Dak Prescott, while Wirfs is replacing San Francisco 49ers OT Trent Williams, who is headed to Super Bowl LVIII.
Both players overcame significant questions coming into the season. Mayfield obviously had the biggest ones to answer, having signed to be the player to replace a living legend in Tom Brady with little on his resume to suggest he could. Wirfs also had to prove that he was capable of making the shift from right tackle over to the left side.
It's safe to say they both answered the call strongly.
Mayfield ended up having a career season with 4044 passing yards and 28 passing touchdowns to 10 interceptions, greatly overperforming the one year, $4 million incentive-laden deal the team gave him last March. He fit in nicely with former Tampa Bay offensive coordinator Dave Canales' offense, where he set some notable records in both the regular season and the postseason.
Wirfs finished with the highest Pro Football Focus grade out of all Buccaneers who played more than 3 snaps. In 1233 regular season snaps, turned in an offensive grade of 83.5 with a pass blocking mark of 86.1.
Mike Evans, according to the Bucs' release, will miss the event with an undisclosed injury. Evans was an original ballot selection.
The Pro Bowl Games will take place from Thursday February 1 through Sunday February 4 in Orlando, Florida.
