Kevin Stefanski adding Jim Schwartz to his staff to lead the Cleveland Browns defense may have been their biggest move of the offseason.

Cleveland has a top-flight defense through the first nine weeks and has put together some very good performances. The Week 9 win over the Cardinals where they allowed just 58 total yards in a 27-0 win was an all-timer.

FanNation put together bold takes for each NFL team and they might have hit the nail on the head with the Browns one.

“There is only one relevant topic pertaining to the Browns and their playoff aspirations the rest of the season: When will Deshaun Watson be on the field and can he perform the way Cleveland expects him to given his massive, fully guaranteed contract? But what I’m most interested in watching is how Cleveland’s defense continues to perform after it got off to one of the best starts in franchise history. Even with a couple of small stumbles against the Colts and Seahawks, my bold prediction is that the Browns’ defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz will be named the NFL Assistant Coach of the Year after the season ends.” — Brendan Gulick, Browns Digest

Along with Schwartz, the Browns added a massive amount to their defense last offseason. Along the defensive line, they brought in Za’Darius Smith, Dalvin Tomlinson, Maurice Hurst, Shelby Harris, and Ogbonnia Okoronkwo. Juan Thornhill and Rodney McLeod have been impactful in the secondary.

Cleveland’s defense was always going to be improved from last season with the investments they’ve made in personnel but Schwartz’s system has definitely unlocked more potential. The Browns’ defense is playing with a swagger that I’m not sure we have seen in Cleveland.

Myles Garrett is set to have the best season of his career this year and may win Defensive Player of the Year. Schwartz’s system unleashes defensive linemen and that’s exactly what Garrett has done.

Don’t be surprised if Schwartz is in Cleveland for a short time and ends up a head coach again before long.
