The Buffalo Bills were buyers at the NFL trade deadline as Brandon Beane swooped in to get his guy, Rasul Douglas. It took the team sending a third-round pick to get some help in the cornerback room, but the Bills Mafia should feel great about the trade.
Brandon Beane got back a fifth in exchange after the team reportedly tried to get Jaylon Johnson from the Bears. Ultimately, that fell through so Beane got to work to bring Douglas to Buffalo. The veteran cornerback has a history with Bills QB Josh Allen, I previously wrote about their viral interaction last season in Buffalo's win over the Packers.
First and foremost, Douglas is an absolute dog who is going to be a difference-maker on this defense that so desperately needs some help in the cornerback room. With uncertainty surrounding the abilities of former first-round pick Kaiir Elam, and Tre'Davious White being lost for the season, this was the move the team needed to make.
Now, this doesn't mean that Douglas is going to come in off the rip and provide meaningful minutes on the roster. More likely than not it will take him a few weeks to get up to speed before the team feels confident giving him meaningful snaps. I have been wrong on more than one occasion, but that's the sense that I get from his acquisition.
Douglas is more than just a talented cornerback on this roster, he's a vocal leader and a fan favorite from the Packers faithful, and for good reason. This wouldn't be the first time the Bills grabbed a former Packers player who then immediately turned around to be a cornerstone on the defense and a vocal locker room leader. Case and point, Micah Hyde.
Let's take a look at Douglas' most recent interview after the loss to the Saints to see what kind of leader Douglas is on the football field. After the loss, Douglas was blunt, "I've never been a loser in my life. These last two years have been f***ing loser. That sh** ain't me."
So, first and foremost, he's a fired-up competitor who will wear losses on his shoulders and isn't afraid to speak his mind. This is the type of leader who can bring up his teammates and doesn't shy away from difficult conversations, furthering the genius that is Brandon Beane with this move.
Next, let's take a look at Aaron Nagler and his comments on Douglas after he was traded away from the Packers. It provides some even more insight into the type of man Douglas is and what he'll be able to do with the Buffalo Bills.
Speaking on behalf of Packers fans, Aaron Nagler was open and honest about his feelings, "It sucks from the sense of 2023 because as we have discussed here many times over the course of this losing streaks. He's (Rasul Douglas) one of the few players out there who looks like he gives a damn every Sunday."
Nagler continued, explaining why even it doesn't matter that Douglas isn't necessarily a shutdown corner, "I get he's not the greatest corner, I get he's not a shutdown guy. But he plays with passion, he plays with physicality, and he brings it every single down. Buffalo is getting a real one here."
Buffalo got much more than a cornerback in the trade, they've got a proven leader who isn't afraid to leave it all out on the field each and every week. The Bills Mafia should be ecstatic over this pick, we know we are.
