NFL teams typically don't submit weekly game status updates until their final injury report, but the Kansas City Chiefs have decided to rule a player out early ahead of their trip to Frankfurt, Germany.
After missing practice on Thursday with an illness, Chiefs RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire has been ruled out of the Week 9 game against the Miami Dolphins. We suggested that the team might proceed with caution with his illness given the flu and other seasonal illnesses going around this time of the year. It appears they've taken that advice by ruling Edwards-Helaire out.
What exactly does this mean for Week 9 against the Dolphins? Well, the running back depth could be tested quickly.
CEH, Jerick McKinnon, and Chiefs' RB depth
Edwards-Helaire isn't the only running back in Kansas City who is dealing with something this week. Jerick McKinnon is listed on the injury report with a groin injury and he didn't practice on Wednesday. He was a limited participant on Thursday, and his status heading into the game is unknown. If he's unable to take on a big workload, the only running back on the 53-man roster is Isiah Pacheco. That could leave Kansas City shorthanded, which means they'll have to promote someone for the practice squad for Week 9.
Who will be elevated from the practice squad?
The Chiefs have just two running backs on the practice squad: La'Mical Perine and Deneric Prince. I suspect that if the Chiefs elevate a player for Week 9, it'll be Perine. Not only is he a veteran player, but Perine was already elevated once this season, although he didn't play on that occasion. There's also the fact that Perine played for the Miami Dolphins in 2022 on their practice squad. He joined the Chiefs' practice squad in January ahead of the team's postseason run. Many believed Perine did enough in the preseason to warrant a 53-man roster spot, so the writing is on the wall on this one. Who knows, a good performance could force a tough decision for Kansas City.
