The future is now for Tennessee. Or near, at least. Fans got a first glimpse of that in the second half of a blowout at Neyland Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
Freshman QB Nico Iamaleava notched his first career touchdown in a Tennessee uniform in the third quarter against UConn. The freshman found TE McCallan Castles for a 19-yard score to put the Vols ahead 56-3.
The scoring strike capped off a very solid drive from the Vols' sensational freshman, as the Vols covered 78 yards on 8 plays.
Iamaleava showed off both his arms and his legs on the drive. On third-and-five from the UT 38-yard line, Iamaleava took off running and picked up 25 yards before smartly sliding down. He completed 3 of 5 passes for 44 yards on the drive.
Iamaleava is in a great situation in Knoxville. The five-star quarterback from Long Beach, CA came in and has had the opportunity to get playing time sparingly in three games so far this year while getting to learn Josh Heupel's system and observe senior Joe Milton.
However, when his number is called next fall as the Vols' starting quarterback, this is a good first look at the type of balanced threat that Tennessee's young budding star under center will pose to opposing teams for the next few years.
