The New Orleans Saints are clearly on a mission. Their defense is trying to prove that their lack of turnover production in 2022 was an anomaly.
Through Week 9, they have done exactly that in 2023. The Saints turnover luck is turning back to their favor in a major way. The Saints lead the NFL in interceptions (12) through nine weeks of play.
New Orleans recorded just seven interceptions last season. It was a franchise low. Only the New York Giants and Las Vegas Raiders had fewer in 2022.
Between interceptions and fumbles, the Saints have totaled 18 takeaways this season through nine weeks.
That's tied with the Jacksonville Jaguars for the most in the NFL. They're forcing the issue and getting the ball back for their offense that is improving week-by-week.
A large piece of the defensive pie has been Paulson Adebo. He's been a turnover machine this season, totaling three interceptions and two forced fumbles. He and Marshon Lattimore are arguably the best CB duo in the league so far this season.
Not to mention, the linebackers are causing problems as well, Pete Werner has a knack for being in the right place at the right time, and Demario Davis is one of the best linebackers in the NFL.
The turnover luck was bound to bounce back in New Orleans' favor after last season. They were too talented for those lousy takeaway numbers to prove their defensive prowess.
The ball simply did not bounce their way on many occasions. It's football. That happens.
Now, they are a defense that is built on taking the football away when given the opportunity.
