The Kansas City Chiefs are reuniting with their sixth-round draft pick from the 2023 NFL draft.
As first reported by KPRC2's Aaron Wilson, Coburn plans to re-sign to the Chiefs' practice squad. Coburn, of course, was a sixth-round draft choice out of the University of Texas during last April's draft.
It has been a whirlwind couple of weeks for Coburn, but this was always the original plan. When the Chiefs first waived him back in October, they had hoped to bring him back on the practice squad.
The Denver Broncos had different plans, claiming the rookie draft pick and keeping him on their 53-man roster for several weeks. He was a healthy scratch for each of the games he was with Denver, which wasn't unlike his situation in Kansas City. He was waived on Tuesday by the Broncos and he cleared waivers on Wednesday, paving the way for his return.
Now that he's back on the practice squad with the Chiefs, the rookie will be afforded some time to learn and develop in the system. The big difference is that he no longer is on the cushy, four-year contract of a draft pick. That's something the team anticipated when they waived him the first time around and tried to get him back on the practice squad. The team will still have control for several years via restricted and exclusive rights free agency.
The Chiefs had a free space on the practice squad, so no corresponding moves need to be made to accommodate Coburn's return.
