Even after the Kansas City Chiefs' big win over the Chicago Beras, we still need to worry about something. In fact, the Chiefs 41-10 win shed light on the issue at hand. In other words, we didn't know this was a potential issue until it happened against the Bears, a game that was the most-watched game of the week.
The Chiefs were up big on the Bears the whole game. At halftime, the Bears still hadn't scored, and the Chiefs already almost had their combined score from the first two games. In those first two, the Chiefs scored a combined 37 points.
On Sunday, they had 34 at the half.
The Chiefs ended up hanging things up in the fourth quarter. They didn't necessarily give up, but they started to save their energy, playbook, and starters for next week. They pulled all starters then, and the offense kind of just stopped putting up points.
That's not the issue, though. The issue is what happened when those backups, specifically the quarterback, came in. Blaine Gabbert was, well, terrible, and that's an issue.
He was 3/5 on the day, with 35 passing yards and almost as many interceptions as completions, with two. His decision-making was bad, and he just didn't look good overall. That's an issue, to say the least, that the Chiefs didn't have in the past.
Chad Henne, who is now retired, was never a backup we had to worry about playing badly. Instead, he actually saved games, most importantly, two playoff games. He had a game-winning play against the Cleveland Browns when Mahomes went out with a concussion and a 99-yard touchdown drive against the Jacksonville Jaguars in the playoffs last season when Mahomes rolled his ankle.
Mahomes, if he somehow did get hurt, which no one wants to see, doesn't have the luxury anymore of having Chad Henne back him up. That is very evident now, too. We just needed to see it in live-game action.
This could be an issue in the future, or maybe Gabbert just had a bad game.
Chiefs blowout win over Bears tops NFL Week 3 viewership numbers
Very impressive, to say the least.
