The Kansas City Chiefs started off the 2023 NFL season with a loss to the Detroit Lions. It's the first time during the Patrick Mahomes era that the Chiefs have opened the year with a loss.

“It doesn’t feel good, you want to win," Mahomes told reporters on Wednesday. "Obviously, I’ll be motivated as much as I always am, and that’s to go out there and win the week and it’s a great opportunity to go up against a great football team so I’m excited for it.”

On the same day Kansas City will face the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 2, Patrick Mahomes will turn 28 years old. The team is hoping to turn their fortunes on what will be a special day for their star quarterback.

A win against the Jaguars, who last faced the Chiefs in the AFC divisional round, will take a full team effort. Not only will the receiving corps and Mahomes have to be at their best after a disappointing loss in Week 1, but the offensive line will have to be at their best against a talented defensive front.

"I’ve played them twice and understand that it’s going to be a great challenge for our offensive line," Mahomes said. "I’ve got a lot of trust in those guys. We’ll just try to keep building as an offense, and I need to get the ball out of my hand. I’ll get it out of my hand, and if we need to take a shot, I’ll trust those guys to make the blocks."

It shouldn't be too difficult to turn the chapter on last week's game and performance. The offense, including Mahomes, has a clear chip on their shoulders. They feel they let the Week 1 game escape them.

"I think guys are ready to go, we didn’t like how we played this last Thursday," Mahomes said. "I think guys are ready to get out there and kind of prove to everybody — even ourselves — who we really are.”

A win wouldn't just represent a return to form, but it'd also be a great birthday gift for No. 15, who has been visibly irate at the team's Week 1 performance.
