The Buffalo Bills S Damar Hamlin has yet to see the field this season, a healthy scratch from the team's first two regular season games has the fanbase clamoring to see him on the field once again.
Hamlin's story is one that they write Hollywood movies about. In a contest against the Cincinnati Bengals last season, Hamlin suffered a reported cardiac arrest and needed to be resuscitated on the field. Quick thinking from Bills assistant athletic trainer Denny Kellington is a big reason why Hamlin is alive today.
While this traumatic near-death experience would have many shying away from playing the game ever again, Hamlin has been adamant about returning to the NFL and has rehabbed all offseason to make it possible.
While busy with his rehabilitation program, Hamlin has been busy outside of football. From going to Capitol Hill to advocate for AEDs to be in high schools, to going on tour with the Chasing M's foundation to provide CPR training across the country, he's truly been an inspiration. It appears that the Bills Mafia aren't the only ones to think so, either.
Hamlin was able to write another impressive chapter on his journey to recovery as he has been awarded with the 2023 George Halas Award. This award, as Alaina Getzenberg from ESPN reported, is awarded to a member of the league who overcomes the most adversity to succeed. If Hamlin wasn't the most deserving of the award, we don't know who is.
The Professional Football Writers of America are the one responsible for the award and Katherine Fitzgerald, Bills reporter for the Buffalo News, was there to present Hamlin with the award.
"On behalf of the PFWA, this was voted on by reporters all around the country covering all teams, the league. For your indomitable spirit in overcoming adversity… It's been so cool to see your journey"
Hamlin, often quiet-mannered, opened up after receiving the award, "Thank you so much. It's an honor to be chosen and selected with so many great people who've won."
Another great day for Hamlin and the Bills Mafia. For now, we just cannot wait to see him back on the football field. Fingers crossed it's not a third consecutive week of him being a healthy scratch.
