Tennessee Vols outside linebackers coach/special teams coordinator Mike Ekeler offered a unique description of one of UT's biggest weapons earlier this week.
Ekeler spoke at the Knoxville Quarterback Club this week ahead of Tennessee's showdown with Florida in Gainesville and he spoke about Vols kick/punt returner Dee Williams.
“And then you look at Dee Williams, I mean, Dee Williams, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again — there’s not a better returner in college football — maybe in football," said Ekeler. "He’s that special."
“And I told Dee, I said, ‘I will never, ever tell you what to do, man. You’re like Picasso. You just paint, man. You see it. You paint it. You know where the leverage is, and freakin’ have at it, buddy.’ But I absolutely love that guy," added Ekeler.
I'm not sure I've ever heard a returner compared to Picasso, but hey, it works.
Williams is averaging 24.6 yards per punt return so far this season and 25.0 yards per kick return.
Those are hidden stats in the box score that are important to Tennessee's success.
Williams is essentially picking up two first downs for the Vols with his returns. Getting the ball at the 50-yard line instead of the 25-yard line can be the difference in a drive ending in points and a drive ending in a punt.
Williams doesn't touch the ball often during games, but when he does, he has the opportunity to make a massive impact for the Volunteers.
