When Robert Saleh took the podium on Tuesday and confirmed the worst, that Aaron Rodgers had in fact torn his Achilles, we all assumed that his year with the New York Jets was over and quite possibly, his tenure in the NFL.
Not so fast.
Aaron spoke with Pat McAfee on Friday following successful surgery to repair his torn Achilles and told Jets fans all the things they hoped they would hear. And even some things they didn't expect to hear.
Rodgers, in his first public comments outside of social media posts hinted that not only was he not finished playing football for the New York Jets, but he might not be finished playing for the New York Jets this season.
Quoting Celtics forward after winning an NBA title, Rodgers said "anything is possible" when it comes to the possibility of him returning this year. He wasn't so brash as to promise anything, or even commit to the likelihood of his return, but he isn't counting himself out yet, and frankly, neither should Jets fans.
Achilles tears usually around eight to ten weeks in a cast or brace followed by about six months of physical therapy. While that time table is for the average person, Rodgers is a professional athlete and will attempt to push his body.
Los Angeles Rams running back Cam Akers returned to the field about five and half months following his Achilles tear. It sounds like Rodgers is focused on that type of time table.
The more realistic and optimistic statement came when McAfee questioned whether his age would lean him towards calling it quits on his career.
"Give me all the timetables. Give me all the things you think can, should or would happen, because all I need is that extra little one percent of inspiration," Rodgers said. "Give me your doubts, give me your prognostications, and then watch what I do."
The Jets and their fans should be cautiously optimistic about this news. He does not sound like a guy who is ready to walk away from the game and we all know his propensity to use negativity as fuel.
Rodgers seemed to be in good spirits and enjoyed hearing all of the doubters (especially Keith Olbermann). It almost seemed as if Rodgers was placing a larger chip on his shoulder as he listened to people claim that he was done after the injury.
I do not expect we will see Aaron Rodgers in a Jets uniform again this season, but I have little doubt that he will return in 2023 and aim to prove any doubters wrong. That is just the way that guy is built. He lives to be doubted and prove those doubters wrong.
I know it is a statement Jets fans are sick of hearing, but next year will be better. Now if we can just see about that grass…
NFL players blame Jets’ artificial turf for Aaron Rodgers injury
They knew it was a problem last year. They knew it was a problem the year before. And the year before that. And their solution was to put a band-aid over a bullet wound. Players have been calling to get rid of artificial turf for years now. And now, the New York Jets lost their […]
