We're screaming through the college football season already with Week 5's arrival.
Kansas City Chiefs scouts continue to travel around the country to evaluate the next generation of NFL talent. Even with the NFL season here, it's important to pay attention to the players who are showing out on Saturday. A handful of those players will find themselves playing in Arrowhead Stadium this time next year.
I've identified over 160 college prospects to keep an eye on ahead of the 2024 NFL draft, all of whom might be potential fits with the Chiefs. Below you'll find a wide receiver who fits a prototype that the team has recently been looking at.
Texas WR Adonai "AD" Mitchell
Height: 6-foot-4
Weight: 196 pounds
Class: Junior
A three-star recruit in the 2021 class, Mitchell had offers from over a dozen teams. He committed to play with the University of Georgia. Throughout two seasons, Mitchell appeared in 21 games with 15 career starts. He would have appeared in more if not for an ankle injury in 2022. During his two years with the Bulldogs, Mitchell amassed 38 receptions for 560 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 14.7 yards per reception. He scored a touchdown in each of Georgia's appearances in the national championship in 2021 & 2022.
In 2023, Mitchell entered the transfer portal and joined the University of Texas. They were one of the teams to recruit him coming out of high school. The 20-year-old has 19 targets with 15 receptions for 180 receiving yards and three touchdowns through four games this season.
How does he fit in Kansas City?
Mitchell is the prototypical size/speed threat at the "X" receiver position that NFL teams are looking for nowadays. He's got the ability to play physically at the catch point and box out smaller defensive backs, but he's also got a slick double move and adequate speed to beat man coverage deep down the field. He has all of the accompanying skills that Andy Reid likes at the wide receiver position, whether we're talking about stalk blocking, route spacing, or improvisational awareness.
Kansas City recently added two size/speed types at the receiver position on the practice squad with Chase Cota and Daniel Arias. Could the Chiefs be looking for someone to fill that mold in the offense in the future? Yes, they have Justyn Ross already, but he hasn't progressed as quickly as fans or perhaps even the team had hoped. A player like Mitchell could push Ross or even fulfill the role himself as a rookie.
Round estimation:
Mitchell has been consistently regarded in the top 100 of the 2024 NFL draft. I've seen him go in the late first round of many early mock drafts, but I think the top 50 is probably the most realistic range for him should he keep his current pace and choose to declare. He'll be aided by posting strong numbers during pre-draft workouts.
