The Kansas City Chiefs have decided to err on the side of caution with an injured veteran player, paving the way for a rookie to make his NFL regular season debut.

The Chiefs announced on Saturday that they had ruled out veteran RB Jerick McKinnon, who has been battling a groin injury for the last four weeks or so. McKinnon was a limited participant in practice on Thursday and Friday after being a non-participant on Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the Chiefs elevated rookie RB Deneric Prince to the 53-man roster via standard elevation. Prince was an early favorite in rookie minicamp and OTAs for Kansas City, flashing great pass-catching ability. However, when the pads came on at training camp, he was quickly supplanted by La'Mical Perine in the offensive pecking order.

Perine, of course, ran out of practice squad elevations after he was elevated to the 53-man roster with McKinnon also ruled out last week. That's one of the reasons the team went out to sign RB Keaontay Ingram, but it's clear that he didn't quite have the time to get up to speed this week.

Prince is a bit of a different style back compared to Perine. His pass-catching skills flashed during the offseason, but he's also got some speed and power to his game. Chiefs special teams coordinator Dave Toub likened him to Knile Davis as a kick return specialist, so there's that aspect of the elevation that could come into play as well.
