The playoffs start now for the Buffalo Bills. With one more loss, the fat lady will begin warming her vocal cords to sing farewell to any hopes of the postseason for Buffalo.
The good news for the Bills is that they've won the last two regular-season games against the Chiefs, and Josh Allen is tremendous against Kansas City in his career, racking up a passer rating of 110.8 in three regular-season matchups.
In a game the Bills need to win, this is how they'll do it:
1. Someone needs to step up offensively
Josh Allen has always played well against Kansas City, and he's going to need another big game for Buffalo to leave Arrowhead with a 7-6 record and their playoff hopes still alive.
This also means, though, that someone else has to step up. Because if you look at the top contributors for teams when facing the Chiefs, they've been held in check. A.J. Brown only had one catch, Keenan Allen had a mostly quiet day against them, as did Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill. The Chiefs are going to lock in on Stefon Diggs and make someone else beat them. So Dalton Kincaid, Gabe Davis, Khalil Shakir- one of them needs to have a big day if the Bills want to win.
2. Patrol the shallow portion of the field
Patrick Mahomes likes to throw to his left, and the Chiefs have been nickel-and-diming teams all season. Kansas City chalks up throws to the left at the seventh-highest pace in the NFL, and they are 28th in average depth of target. While Travis Kelce is a big part of those shallow targets, it's also Noah Gray, Justin Watson, and Rashee Rice who get a respectable number of them, as well.
This means the likes of Terrel Bernard, Tyrel Dodson, and Taron Johnson will need to anticipate the quick throws and stop them for minimal gains, and perhaps cash in on a takeaway that could swing the result of the game.
3. Be the aggressors
Three times, the Bills have been given a lead with less than two minutes remaining this season where they've ended up losing the game. Why? Because Sean McDermott coaches scared. He's all about dropping back, playing soft coverage, and keeping players in front of you. Well, that's allowed Mac Jones to drive down the field and score with less than 10 seconds left. It also allowed the Eagles to coast down the field in overtime and win.
That conservative style needs to be left in the rearview mirror. Because if you allow Travis Kelce to just find holes in the zone, or give Patrick Mahomes time to pick apart a zone defense, they'll gladly pick you apart with eight and 12-yard gains. These Chiefs receivers aren't anything to be morbidly afraid of. Press them at the line of scrimmage. Make Skyy Moore and Marquez Valdez-Scantling beat you. If they do, tip the cap. But don't play conservative and let this be a game where Patrick Mahomes kills you via death by a thousand cuts, and don't let your superstar quarterback out to dry once again.
