With the dust from the early signing period finally settled, ESPN named the most important recruit for each team ranked in the top 25.
And they chose a player on the offensive side of the ball for the Tennessee Vols.
ESPN went with five-star wide receiver Mike Matthews as Tennessee's most important 2024 recruit.
From ESPN: Most important recruit: WR Mike Matthews (ESPN 300 No. 10). Defensive end Jordan Ross could be the pick here with help in the pass rush, but Matthews is a five-star receiver, and the passing game is of the utmost importance to coach Josh Heupel. Matthews is a 6-foot-1,185-pound receiver from Georgia and is ranked as the No. 4 pass-catcher in the class. Receiver Ramel Keyton is a senior and led the team in receiving touchdowns this season, so getting Matthews to help fill that void will be important.
Matthews, 6-foot-1/180 lbs from Lilburn, GA, is rated in 247Sports' composite rankings as the No. 5 wide receiver in the nation.
The Vols had several options that could've been listed here, which shows how much talent Tennessee signed in this class (even though their class wasn't ranked among the top five classes in the nation, the Vols still added some elite talent).
Five-star edge rusher Jordan Ross and four-star athlete Boo Carter, who will start on the defensive side of the ball, could've also been listed by ESPN.
Matthews, Ross, and Carter each have the potential to play key roles for the Vols as true freshmen next fall.
