Kansas City Chiefs WR Kadarius Toney is coming under fire for his continued on-field mistakes once again, this time from external sources.
Appearing on the "Up And Adams Show" on FanDuel TV, former New England Patriots TE Rob Gronkowski, a future Hall of Famer, was asked to weigh in on what's going on with the Chiefs' receiver. He recognizes that Toney has all of the God-given talents of an elite NFL player, but Gronk questions whether Toney has the drive, desire, and love for the game of football necessary to play at a high level in the league.
Check it out:
"Kadarius Toney is an athletic freak," Gronkowski exclaimed. "He can run routes like no other. He can return punts. But, when you're making costly mistakes like that, in and out, I mean from the beginning of the season to the middle of the season, throughout your whole career, it's kind of like you don't love the game of football.
"You're just out there because you're just so athletic that you're born with that type of athleticism, but you're not out there to be the best teammate you can be or the best football player that you can be. Because those mistakes that he's making should have been corrected after the first time. If you love the game of football, you go back to the locker room, you take accountability of it all, you go hit the practice field and you make sure you look that ball in, catch it, and tuck it, and secure that ball well. That's what you do if you love football and you don't make that mistake again. But when you keep making mistakes like that, you must not be that much into the game, and you must not love the game."
Now, Gronkowski might sound like he's on a bit of a high horse here, especially given the fact that he had plenty of drops and mistakes during his illustrious career. But he's also been around a lot of championship football teams and he knows what love for the game looks like, and it's fair that he's not seeing it from afar in Kadarius Toney.
This isn't exactly the first time that Toney's love of the game of football has come into question either. It was constantly brought up during his brief tenure with the New York Giants, specifically as it related to his Hip-Hop alter ego "Young Joka" and his music. Media and fans questioned whether he truly loved the game and whether that aspect of Toney's life was a major off-the-field distraction.
The Chiefs have made it clear they're not giving up on Toney, even after his recent wave of costly mistakes. Yet, it's hard to believe there will be much leeway given if the same issues continue to pop up as the season continues.
