The Kansas City Chiefs got a head start on the 2024 NFL offseason by hosting a wave of tryouts on Tuesday.
The team can soon begin signing players to reserve/future deals. If you’re unfamiliar with these types of contracts, the players signed to reserve/future deals won’t officially join the team until the new league year begins in March. These are the players who will help fill out the 90-man offseason roster and compete for a roster spot as the offseason progresses.
Here's a quick look at the 10 players the Chiefs worked out on Tuesday:
DL Deslin Alexandre
If this name sounds familiar, that's because the Chiefs hosted Alexandre on a top-30 visit ahead of the 2023 NFL draft. He was a two-time team captain, three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection, and four-year starter for the Pittsburgh Panthers, where he recorded 131 total tackles, 29.5 tackles for loss, 16.5 sacks, seven passes batted, two fumbles recoveries, an interception and a safety. He went undrafted in 2023, spending the offseason with the New York Jets before landing with the Chicago Bears practice squad until November when he was released.
QB Ian Book
A former fourth-round pick by the New Orleans Saints out of Notre Dame in the 2021 NFL draft, Book has started one NFL game during his career. He went 12-for-20 for 135 yards and two interceptions during that game. He was waived during the 2022 roster cuts and was claimed by the Philadelphia Eagles. He spent the 2022 NFL season and 2023 NFL offseason with the Eagles before he was again waived. He most recently spent some time on the practice squad for the New England Patriots.
WR Jacob Copeland
A wide receiver out of Maryland, Copeland went undrafted in 2023 and wound up with the Tennessee Titans. The 5-foot-11, 201-pound wide receiver posted 422 yards and three touchdowns for the Terrapins in 2022. He ran a 4.42 40-yard dash at the combine. He spent a month with the Minnesota Vikings early in the 2023 NFL season, then later landed on the practice squad with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
RB Hassan Hall
An undrafted free agent from the 2023 NFL draft class, Hall played collegiate ball at Louisville and Georgia Tech. He signed with the Cleveland Browns following the draft, but he didn't make it through 53-man roster cuts. He was re-signed to the practice squad, where he spent time until he was released in late September. He's since been with the Arizona Cardinals and New York Giants practice squads.
LB Tyler Murray
A rookie out of the University of Memphis, Murray had a bit of a rags-to-riches story in 2023. He was working as an Amazon employee after flaming out with the Cincinnati Bengals when the Pittsburgh Steelers came calling and signed him on the 53-man roster. He spent about a month with the Steelers before he was eventually released again. He's listed at 6-foot-1 and 227, finishing his final collegiate season with 67 tackles, six tackles for loss, two interceptions, and two passes defended.
WR Reggie Roberson Jr.
A teammate of Rashee Rice's at SMU, Roberson Jr. went undrafted in 2022. He kicked around between the Tennessee Titans and Chicago Bears' practice squads that season, before spending the full offseason in Nashville in 2023. He didn't cut it with 53-man roster cutdowns and has been a free agent ever since. As a senior for the Mustangs, he managed 51 catches for 625 yards and six touchdowns.
DE Jordan Smith
A fourth-round draft pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2021 out of UAB, Smith didn't make his NFL debut until Week 16 of his rookie campaign. He looked to be a part of the Jags' future, but he suffered a serious knee injury that saw him placed on injured reserve during OTAs ahead of the 2022 NFL season. Smith sat out the entirety of the 2022 and 2023 with injury and is looking to jump-start his NFL career. He also played one season for Butler (KS).
DE Noah Taylor
A former North Carolina Tar Heel, Taylor went undrafted in 2023 and he didn't wind up on a training camp roster during the offseason. His rights were claimed by the XFL's Arlington Renegades back in June, but with the merger of the XFL and USFL into the UFL, he found himself looking for other opportunities. The 6-foot-3 and 238-pound edge rusher finished his final collegiate season with 28 total tackles, six tackles for loss, and 3.5 sacks after only playing eight games due to injury.
RB SaRodorick Thompson Jr.
Thompson hails from Patrick Mahomes' alma mater, Texas Tech, where he had 540 career carries for over 2,500 yards and 40 rushing touchdowns. He signed with the Seattle Seahawks following the 2023 NFL draft, where he spent the entire offseason. He did not survive 53-man roster cuts in Seattle, but he returned to their practice squad for a portion of the season when they dealt with running back injuries.
CB Rezjohn Wright
You might remember Wright from the Netflix series "Last Chance U." He also played collegiate ball at Oregon State in 2022, where he recorded 38 tackles, two interceptions, and nine passes defended. He went undrafted in the 2023 NFL draft, spending time with the Carolina Panthers and Las Vegas Raiders during the past year.
Chiefs’ second-year starter is key to reaching Super Bowl LVIII
If the Kansas City Chiefs want to get back to the Super Bowl, they need to rely on second-year RB Isiah Pacheco as the lightning rod for the offense.
