The Kansas City Chiefs will be getting a reinforcement on the defensive side of the ball ahead of the team's Week 7 tilt with the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.

One of the team's top free-agent signings, Charles Omenihu, was removed from the reserve/suspended list last Friday following a six-game suspension. Kansas City received a temporary roster exemption for Omenihu, which means they don't have to immediately make a corresponding roster move and activate him to the 53-man roster. Rest assured that he will soon be activated and make his return.

Speaking to reporters on Monday, Chiefs HC Andy Reid detailed what he's seen from the defensive line with Omenihu's return to action in mind.

"Yeah, listen, I think the front has done a real nice job," Reid said. "You know, with pressure and getting to the quarterback. They've done a pretty good job with the run game likewise. You add Charles (Omenihu) in there, who is a good football player, to the mix. I'm kind of looking forward to seeing him get in there. I don't know if he's going to be able to just step right in and play the whole game, one of those things. I think we probably just ease him back in and let him get going there. We'll see how he does."

As for Omenihu's exact status heading into Week 7 against the Chargers, Reid expects that the defensive lineman will be able to play in some capacity. However, they'll be cautious with his snaps and repetitions with the goal of easing him back after a long suspension.

"You know, I think there's a good chance for that," Reid said. "He's been back here and he's staying in good shape or is in good shape. It's just a matter of getting him back in there. He went through all of camp and he's worked his tail off. Like I said, he's kept himself in good shape when he was gone here, but it's just a matter of getting back in and getting into the swing of things again."

Omenihu should provide a big boost for the Chiefs' defensive line room, which has already out-performed expectations. Last year with the San Francisco 49ers, Omenihu recorded seven sacks and 61 pressures as a rotational pass rusher, playing both inside and outside alignments. Omenihu notched three total tackles and one sack during the 2023 NFL preseason with Kansas City.
