In June the Detroit Lions made a move that didn't make a ton of sense at the time. They waived undrafted rookie kicker James Turner after Turner had been impressive at OTAs and minicamp. Turner then got claimed by the Packers. At the time it felt like a bad move, last week it felt even worse after the Lions lost Michael Badgley to a season ending injury.

Now the Lions have a shot to right that wrong. The Packers have released Turner.

The Lions are on the lookout for kickers at the moment and they have some options. They could sign UFL kicker Andre Szmyt who they worked out last week or they could run things back with Riley Patterson who just got waived by the Jaguars. If they don't want to do either or those things, they can go get Turner back.

At the end of the day, Jake Bates should land the job. But he has struggled with accuracy since coming to Detroit. Having some competition could help him nail down the things he needs to work on. Turner showed that he could be good competition at OTAs.

We'll see what the Lions choose to do soon. They still have an open roster spot at the moment and they'll likely fill it relatively soon.
