We graded every Lions player from the Vikings win, and Jahmyr Gibbs nearly had a perfect game, Lions need help opposite D.J. Reed after this one
Jahmyr Gibbs came within one point of joining the 50 club, Jimmy Rolder surprisingly led the defense, and one Lions cornerback had a game to forget.
The Detroit Lions knocked off the previously undefeated Minnesota Vikings on Sunday. Now it’s time for this week’s Lions M.O.O.N. Grades. M.O.O.N. stands for Measure of On-Field Net Impact, and it measures how much each player affected the game, both positively and negatively.
Every player starts at 25 points. The goal is to reach 50. Only three players have done it so far: Jameson Williams, Penei Sewell, and Jahmyr Gibbs. Quarterbacks are the lone exception to the starting point because they begin at 20.

Gibbs was the highest-graded player in the win over Minnesota. He finished with 49 points, which is one point short of rejoining the 50 club.
He lost points on four carries that went for a loss and on one pressure he allowed, which cost him two points. Everything else was good. He had three explosive plays (15 or more yards), eight plays that went for a first down, a touchdown, two receptions, and 18 carries that gained yards.
Early in the game, it looked like Gibbs would post a low score. By the end, he had gone off for 153 yards and a touchdown. That’s a hell of a game.
Jared Goff landed on the other end of the spectrum with a 28 out of 50, his lowest grade of the season. The interception hurt him the most. He had only two big-time throws and one touchdown pass, and he only reached the 100-yard achievement tier. His 72% completion percentage was strong, though.
You have to understand how quarterbacks get graded here. Their scores are built on achievement level. For Goff to reach 50, he would need something like 500 yards and five touchdowns. It would have to be the greatest game you’ve ever seen.
Technically, the lowest-graded player on offense was Larry Borom, but he played only one snap. So the honor goes to Christian Mahogany, who scored a 27 over 72 snaps.
His pass blocking was good. His run blocking didn’t earn him any points, and he allowed a pressure. In the end, nearly all of his points came from that decent pass-blocking performance. It was the worst game Mahogany has played all year, even if it wasn’t a disaster. Detroit needs to see it get better from here.
Sione Vaki deserves a shoutout. He earned a 37, which made him the fourth-highest-graded player of the week. That’s not something we’ve seen from him before. He didn’t lose a single point, and he picked up three first downs on one reception and 11 carries that went for a gain. That’s a strong day for Vaki.

Jimmy Rolder was the highest-graded player on Detroit’s defense. I expected it to be D.J. Reed, but Rolder came through with a sack, a tackle for loss, and 3.5 tackles. He didn’t allow any yards and didn’t lose any points. He simply didn’t do enough to reach 50, which shows how hard it is to get there. That’s why only three players have done it.
Aidan Hutchinson was second on defense with 34 points. He had one pressure, one tackle for loss, and four tackles while losing zero points.
Reed is where things get a little complicated. He earned 8.5 points, eight of which came from his interception, plus half a tackle. But it isn’t entirely his fault that the total stayed low because he didn’t get targeted much.
That makes me wonder if the model needs a tweak. If a corner gets targeted five times and allows only one catch, maybe he should be rewarded for that. On the negative side, Reed had a missed tackle and allowed that one completion, which cost him just one point. He also committed a penalty, and that costs three points. We don’t joke around about penalties.
The worst-graded player on defense was Roger McCreary with an 8.5. It’s not quite as low as the seven Derrick Barnes posted last week, but it’s still rough.
McCreary lost 20 points. He allowed six completions, allowed one explosive play, missed a tackle, and gave up a touchdown. The only thing that earned him points was his 3.5 tackles, which got him 3.5 points. It was a week to forget.
