The Kansas City Chiefs made a roster move on Friday to reinforce their depth at the edge rusher position.
As first reported by KSHB-TV's Nick Jacobs, the Chiefs have signed DE/OLB Owen Carney. An undrafted free agent out of the University of Illinois in 2022, Carney originally signed on with the Miami Dolphins, but he did not make their final roster.
Listed at 6-foot-3 and 275 pounds, Carney had 116 total tackles, 21.5 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, three passes batted, one forced fumble, and one fumble recovery during his collegiate career. He started 28 games for the Illini.
Carney signed with the Bengals practice squad in November of 2022 and spent the remainder of the year with Cincinnati. He signed a reserve/future deal with the team and stuck through the 2023 offseason. The Bengals eventually released him after what can only be described as a strong preseason. In Week 2 against the Falcons that year, Carney had a sack that knocked their opponents out of field goal range and helped Cincy ice the game.
Carney had originally signed on to play with the UFL's Birmingham Stallions, but it appears he's opting for a chance to impress in Kansas City. The Chiefs have needs at the position right now with DE Charles Omenihu (ACL) on the Physically Unable to Perform list and DE BJ Thompson (Heart) still on the Non-Football Illness list.
Chiefs release UDFA LB Luquay Washington Jr. in a corresponding move
To make room for Carney, the Chiefs have waived LB Luquay Washington Jr. from the 90-man offseason roster. An undrafted free agent out of Central Connecticut State University in 2024, Washington was a long shot to make it in Kansas City. The 6-foot and 232-pound linebacker was a bit undersized compared to some other guys in the room.
Washington averaged three tackles per game during his career at CCSU and posted seven sacks, 16.5 tackles for loss, two forced fumbles, three interceptions, five passes defended, and a blocked field goal during his collegiate career. Washington's departure leaves Penn State's Curtis Jacobs and Southern Miss LB Swayze Bozeman as the only rookie linebackers on the team.
