Earlier this offseason, former Tennessee Vols wide receiver Jauan Jennings received a much-deserved two-year contract extension from the San Francisco 49ers.

The deal is worth up to $15.4 million, including $10.5 million guaranteed.

Jennings, a seventh round selection by the 49ers in the 2020 NFL Draft, earned just $2.6 million over the first four years of his NFL career.

The former Vol hasn't put up gaudy numbers in the NFL — 78 receptions for 963 yards and seven touchdowns over the last three seasons — but he's proved to be a key player for San Francisco thanks to his relentless effort, elite blocking skills, and his propensity for coming up clutch on third downs (third and Jauan!).

There was also the touchdown pass he threw in the Super Bowl last season (he also caught a touchdown pass in the Super Bowl).

Sports Illustrated's Albert Breer, a longtime NFL insider, wrote earlier this week that Jennings' extension with the 49ers was the "under-the-radar" signing of the week.

From SI.comUnder-the-radar signing of the week: 49ers receiver Jauan Jennings agreeing to a two-year deal that could end up topping $15 million. Jennings entered the offseason a restricted free agent, and signed his tender, so this didn’t need to happen. But I really like it for both sides. Jennings, who’s made less than $3 million as a pro, gets around $10 million for tacking another year on to his contract and is still set to be a free agent at 28 in the spring of 2026.

Box scores don't always tell the whole story. And Jennings isn't the type of player that typically stuffs the stat sheet (though he has his moments). His impact on the game comes via blocks that don't always get noticed, or the energy he brings whether he's on the field or on the sideline. Jennings, quite simply, wants to win at all costs.

That's why that $10 million in guaranteed money is quite the bargain for the 49ers. Jennings is a tone-setter. And he'll be setting the tone in Northern California for at least the next two seasons.
