The summer college football recruiting cycle is here in all of its chaotic glory. Top tier recruits are making their most critical official visits all throughout the months of May and June, knowing their final decisions are just around the corner.
Five star wide receiver Derek Meadows from the storied Bishop Gorman high school football program in Las Vegas, NV is set to begin his official visits and has made things clear. According to his conversations this week with Chad Simmons of On3 it's down to Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, and Notre Dame as his summer visits schedule kicks off this coming weekend. But what makes this elite prospect so special, and which school will likely land his services?
Derek Meadows, WR Bishop Gorman
It's rare to see such a steep rise in a short amount of time for wide receivers, but Derek Meadows leaped from a fringe 3-4 star to 32nd overall in 247Sports' rankings in just a few short months. After he averaged over 26 yards per reception for Bishop Gorman on their way to a state championship and impressed on the track as well, Meadows was clearly on his way to becoming one of the best wide receiver recruits in the country.
At 6'5", nearly 200 pounds, Meadows offers incredible size, length, track speed, and an ability to go get the ball at the point of catch. He brings a unique skill set that could translate at both wide receiver and tight end long-term, which makes him a mismatch nightmare.
Likely Landing Spot for Meadows
Although he boasts nearly 25 FBS scholarship offers with a few visits to other SEC rivals, Meadows is reportedly down to Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Michigan, and Notre Dame. He'll be visiting all five schools in less than a three-week span from May 31st (Michigan) to June 18th (LSU).
On3 Sports and a few other sources believe that Notre Dame may be in the lead for his services right now, and for good reason. Both Mike Denbrock (new Irish offensive coordinator) and wide receiver's coach Mike Brown have been involved in recruiting him for some time, although in different spots prior to this season. He's also taken at least three unofficial visits with Notre Dame prior to his upcoming official visit in June. There are multiple layers to Notre Dame's relational lead with him.
However, Alabama and Michigan have both met with him this spring too. Kalen DeBoer's high-flying offense just put three wide receivers in the first three rounds of the 2024 NFL Draft. Michigan just won the national championship and is missing his specific body type in their offense.
Georgia and LSU both have well-established track records of sending wide receivers to the NFL, and it's notable that they're still in the mix. However, both staffs have not been involved in his recruitment for a significant amount of time, having only officially offered him early in 2024. They also haven't reportedly hosted him for any spring events. Both the Bulldogs and Tigers could surprise, but they certainly feel like the longer shots.
As visits begin this weekend with Michigan, we'll keep an eye on any changes to his schedule. He seems very close to a decision on his football future.
