Drake Maye, QB, UNC

Height/Weight: 6-4, 223

Age: 21.7

Strengths

  • Quick Trigger: Release is a tad elongated but makes up for it with a flick of the wrist that rockets the ball
  • Tight Window Throws: Excellent placement at intermediate and deep levels of the field and on a variety of concepts
  • Off Platform Throws: Can throw on the run via designed boots and make plays out of structure
  • Processing Speed: Quick-minded and will get through reads with appropriate timing
  • Scrambling: Above average athlete that can gain yards as a pure runner or extend plays with his legs

Areas of Improvement-Concerns

  • Pocket Work: Tends to drift into pressure or clear clean pockets too early
  • Tunnel Vision: Misses peripheral defenders and throws into traffic too much
  • Poise: Can be hurried off his spot
  • Wide Misses: Will dirt the ball, spray fades out of bounds and lead WRs too far

Evaluation:

No QB in the 2024 draft class has the potential that Drake Maye does. At only 21, he has some imperfections in his game that need development before he’s a sufficient starter. But the effortless arm talent, athleticism, football IQ and build are reminiscent of elite QBs like Josh Allen and Justin Herbert. If drafted to the right spot and given the correct coaching, there’s a chance Maye could become a hybrid of the two, devastating defenses for years to come.
