The Kansas City Chiefs are bringing back a former first-round draft pick.
According to multiple reports, the Chiefs are set to re-sign RB Clyde Edwards-Helaire on a one-year deal. Edwards-Helaire was the No. 32 overall pick out of LSU in the 2020 NFL draft and spent three seasons as the starting running back in Kansas City. He was supplanted by Isiah Pacheco halfway through the 2022 NFL season and has remained as depth in Kansas City ever since.
The Chiefs declined Edwards-Helaire's $5.461 million fifth-year option in 2024, which made him an unrestricted free agent when the new league year began. After surveying his options, Edwards-Helaire returns to Kansas City on a deal expected to be for much less than that fifth-year option number.
Edwards-Helaire didn’t live up to the extremely high expectations set forth by his draft slot. He has appeared in 48 career games with Kansas City, including 32 games started. During that span, Edwards-Helaire has 441 attempts for 1,845 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns. He also caught 89 passes for 765 yards and seven touchdowns. He has just four career 100-yard rushing games in both regular season and postseason combined. He’s appeared in eight postseason games with two starts, carrying the ball 39 times for 220 yards and one touchdown.
Edwards-Helaire started in Super Bowl LV against the Bucs and appeared in Super Bowl LVIII against the 49ers, but he missed Super Bowl LVII against the Eagles due to injury. Injuries have been an unfortunate reality of Edwards-Helaire’s NFL career, but last year he made it through without a scratch.
