Byron Murphy, DT, Texas

Height/Weight: 6-0, 297

Age: 21.7

Strengths

  • Twitch: Cat like off the ball with fiery feet and even faster hands
  • Hand usage: Wins with technique not usually seen from interior guys. Makes lineman work to get their hands on him.
  • Pass Rush Moves: Mix of dip and rip, swims and swipes to generate penetration

Areas of Improvement-Concerns

  • POA: Can be washed out and struggle vs double teams
  • Balance: On his knees a lot, particularly when being doubled team, suggesting a lack of anchor

Evaluation:

Byron Murphy is a unique interior defensive lineman because of his size. At 6-0, sub 300 pounds and with 32’ arms, he doesn’t have the length or girth typical of the position. But what he also has that isn’t typical is a set of skills both technical via pass rush moves, and traits based via quickness and agility that most defensive tackles just don’t have. That projects him to be well liked around the league and serve a team immediately as a pass rusher from the interior.
