Days after watching a top-100 quarterback in Keelon Russell jump from an Oregon commit to Alabama, Ducks head coach Dan Lanning has pivoted to a new target. Now, Oregon is looking to flip TCU 4-star commit Ty Hawkins. A visit is coming soon.

Can Oregon Flip QB Ty Hawkins from TCU?

The San Antonio product was looking to stay local by sticking with TCU, but Oregon and SMU are coming, per Chad Simmons of On3. The Elite 11 passer ranks as the 12th-best QB of the 2025 class, and stands 6-foot, 190 pounds.

Hawkins committed to the Horned Frogs on June 24 last year, opting for Sonny Dykes and his team over various other local programs. Ranked as the No. 159 prospect overall and the No. 13 quarterback for the 2025 cycle by the industry composite boards—which takes into account the assessments of four major recruiting media outlets—he also stands as the No. 27 player in Texas.

Among blue-chip quarterbacks for the class of 2025, Hawkins arguably delivered the most impressive performance on the Elite 11 7-on-7 circuit. Demonstrating a fearless approach, Hawkins confidently executes passes into narrow spaces, showcasing remarkable composure in such competitive scenarios.

Why Oregon Lost Keelon Russell to Alabama

Four-star quarterback recruit Keelon Russell, originally from Duncanville, Texas, has switched his commitment from SMU to Alabama. Russell, who is ranked as the 81st recruit in the 2025 class and the 15th in Texas by ESPN, was a target for the Oregon Ducks.

They were interested in flipping the dual-threat QB to their side. Nonetheless, Russell has decided to close his recruitment process after committing to the Crimson Tide.

Russell's choice marked the end of a journey that began in January. The new coach of Alabama, Kalen DeBoer (previously at Washington), along with Nick Sheridan, the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, reached out to him. Russell found the strategy presented by the Crimson Tide to be very compelling.

"They laid out the spot for me on the depth chart — it's something a quarterback dreams of," Russell told ESPN. "I felt like if I took the role that I could do some amazing things at high levels. "I've been in touch with them almost every day since they began recruiting me. If not every day, then every week. They've been on me; really trying to get me there."
