The Denver Broncos are not expected to compete for a Super Bowl in 2024. Let's just be real, they may not even make the playoffs. And, for what their goals and plans are, that's okay. The rebuild of the rebuild has officially started, and it started when they scrapped a large part of their roster by cutting guys like Justin Simmons and bringing in rookie quarterback Bo Nix.

The Broncos have made a ton of changes that fans maybe did not expect them to make. They gutted a lot of the roster, but they also added some really good players that people don't necessarily know about. The Broncos could sneakily be good next year. If their defense is any better, and the quarterback play is sufficient, the Broncos could be fighting for a wildcard spot in the AFC.

But, that's just the thing – that's a whole lot of ifs, ands, and buts. A lot is relying on the Broncos' 2024 season being good. The biggest of them all is how well the defense can play. Pro Football Focus seems to think the Broncos will have a very bad defense in 2024, as they considered it their biggest weakness in 2024.

Biggest weakness in 2023: Defense

Outside of Patrick Surtain II, this defense lacks playmakers at every level. The unit was responsible for a 70-point debacle against the Dolphins in 2023 that made them the laughingstock of the league. Things improved dramatically throughout the season, as defensive coordinator Vance Joseph managed to do damage control and reorganize the defense in a more favorable manner, but there are still a lot of holes that weren’t fixed. While the defense shouldn’t be as bad as it was last season, don’t expect any miracles in 2024.

I think we can possibly see the defense be better than most people think it will be. Here's the deal: It doesn't get much worse than the defense was last season. The unit is somewhat new and young, and with a second year in Vance Joseph's system, the defense could definitely be much better. The team has the personnel to be good, too.

Only time will tell what the defense can really do, but I'm expecting them to be a league-average unit in 2024, while most think they will be among the worst in the league.
