The Georgia Bulldogs will not be heading to Omaha for the men's College World Series after dropping Game 3 of the Athens Super Regional against N.C. State on Monday night at Foley Field.
Georgia attempted to set the tone early in the second inning with Tre Phelps' two-run homer, which gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead. However, it didn't take long for the Wolfpack to take full control of the game, keeping the Bulldogs from scoring over the next three innings.
By the end, the Bulldogs were limited to just seven hits and gave up 15 hits to NC State for a final score of 8-5.
Georgia starter Zach Harris threw for three innings before he was pulled off the mound for reliever Kolten Smith. Harris allowed eight hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts before he was replaced. Smith didn't look any better as he gave up five hits, three earned runs, and three strikeouts.
The Bulldogs were hoping to return to Omaha for the first time since they made their fourth appearance in 2008, but now they will have to wait to try again next year, which is going to be tough without college baseball's best hitter Charlie Condon in their lineup.
Condon hit his 37th homer in his last at-bat in a Bulldogs uniform at the bottom of the ninth. Unfortunately, it wasn't enough to come back and win the game, but it was very fitting for the nation's top slugger.
"It's been a long ride since I got here," Condon said after the loss as he fought back tears. "Just incredibly thankful for this university, this program. Coaches and teammates. Everybody that put all of the time and resources into my development. Really just promoting me to the best that they could. Just wouldn't be anywhere close to who I am without that. Just really, really thankful to be here in this situation."
The Bulldogs officially finish the 2024 college baseball season with a 43-17 record under first-year head coach Wes Johnson.
As for the (38-21) Wolfpack, they will continue their season and face Kentucky (45-14) on Saturday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, NE.
"I thought they had a good ball club. Congratulations to them, they're moving on," Johnson said.
