The New Orleans Saints defense, on paper, is quite talented. At every level, they have proven or intriguing upside. Linebacker is no different.

They will have plenty of snaps to go around at the position, but Demario Davis headlines the group. A couple of other veterans are battling it out behind him. Rookie Jaylan Ford will play a role on special teams and for depth in case of injury, too.

Pete Werner dominated at practice on Tuesday

Werner's performance on Tuesday will hopefully be a sign of things to come. The Saints brought in more competition for Werner this offseason.

Willie Gay Jr. is an energetic force at LB that will contend for defensive snaps. Werner's job is to make sure he locks down the second linebacker role behind Demario Davis. Werner's athleticism has always been impressive, but he did have some inconsistencies in 2023 that New Orleans had not seen from him before.

His play was better in 2022, but he dealt with multiple injuries. Now, he is hoping to be a blende of availability and performance for the black and gold. If he plays to his standard, the Saints have one of the best LB trios in the NFL.

Not to mention, Werner is playing for a new contract in 2024. His deal expires at the end of the upcoming season.

He'll have to prove himself more than ever in order to get an extension from New Orleans. Davis appears to be in the fold for multiple more seasons. Gay Jr. is on a one-year deal for 2024, so he will have that extra motivation to get paid by someone next offseason, too.

We will see how his position battle with Gay Jr. unfolds over the next few months.
