The Ole Miss Rebels have always had to fight for any ounce of respect that the football program has ever received. But with Ole Miss firmly amongst the College Football Playoff contenders for the 2024 season, the Rebels are once again being shortchanged.
The Rebels' 2024 schedule has been known for quite some time. However, kickoff times were made official on Tuesday. Ole Miss fans were immediately up in arms when it was revealed that the Rebels have zero SEC home games at night.
Playing under the lights at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium has become one of the biggest home-field advantages in the country. Unfortunately Ole Miss and its fans could be deprived of that experience in the upcoming season.
There is one opportunity for the SEC to rectify this embarrassing decision. The Georgia Bulldogs will roll into Oxford on Saturday, Nov. 9. That game is currently listed as a FLEX which means the conference has the ability to move that game to whichever time slot feels appropriate.
The fact that the Georgia game isn't an automatic night game is ludicrous. If all goes according to plan the Rebels and Bulldogs will both be in the top-10 by the time game week arrives. There will not be another game in the conference, nor the nation, that will generate the excitement that this game will undoubtedly provide.
The good news is that Lane Kiffin is 13-3 at home in day games since taking over as the head coach at Ole Miss. Even more impressive is that Kiffin's teams are 11-1 when the sun is out at Vaught-Hemingway Stadium since 2020.
Decisions like this is why Ole Miss fans carry a chip on their shoulders when it comes to the SEC's handling of certain things. All Rebels fans can do now is hope for the conference to fix this egregious error and let the Ole Miss faithful spend some extra time in The Grove.
