Kansas City Chiefs' new backup QB Carson Wentz is getting adjusted to his new team and he's already making a positive impression on Patrick Mahomes.
During his days as a starter with the Philadelphia Eagles, Indianapolis Colts, and Washington Commanders there was a bit of a perception that Wentz wasn't a good locker-room presence. Rumors were swirling that he wasn't a good leader, teammate, and so on. He addressed those concerns with poise and class, continuing to work on his craft for the betterment of himself and his team.
Asked about getting to work Wentz over the past few months, Mahomes put to bed any idea that those same concerns might be rehashed in Kansas City.
“It’s been great honestly," Mahomes said. "A great dude and super talented, I think that’s the first thing I saw. I mean you see why he (Carson Wentz) was on pace to win the MVP, the guy can make every throw."
Wentz, of course, was an MVP candidate back in 2017, but his season was derailed by an ACL injury. It paved the way for Nick Foles to take over at quarterback en route to the Eagles' Super Bowl LII victory over the Patriots. The 31-year-old hasn't quite recaptured that same level of success after the knee injury, but his opportunity with the Chiefs might allow a final shot at redemption for the No. 2 overall pick in the 2016 NFL draft.
Taking on a new role as a backup quarterback in Kansas City has admittedly been different for Wentz, but so far he's managed to do everything that has been asked of him. He's already shining with the second-team offense and picking Andy Reid's scheme up rather quickly. His talent, according to Mahomes, is very apparent.
"He’s very smart, intelligent, asks a lot of great questions and he’s been in similar offenses before so it’s easy for him to pick it up I think," Mahomes continued. "Like I said, he’s super talented, I think that’s the first thing I saw.”
