The rivalry between WNBA rookies Caitlin Clark and Angel Reese has taken the sport by storm over the last several weeks.
Clark, the No. 1 overall selection in the 2024 WNBA Draft, and Reese, the No. 7 overall pick, have been rivals since their time in college (Iowa and LSU, respectively).
The rivalry, however, has reached another level in the WNBA — thanks in part to a hard foul by Reese on Clark on Sunday that was deemed a flagrant foul.
On Monday, during an appearance on ESPN's "First Take", former Tennessee Vols guard Andraya Carter offered her take on the Clark/Reese rivalry.
Carter noted that she enjoys watching Clark and Reese play, but she also pointed out that neither are on very good teams.
"What I take from these two going at it, and keeping up with their record in the pros, it's a result right now from what they did in college," said Carter. "These two were rivals in the college game. It has potential to be a rivalry down the road. Right now, I enjoy watching these two trying to have success in the W. But if we're being completely honest, their teams are having a 'mid-off' right now. Their teams are just very mid. They're 8th and 9th in the WNBA standings….their teams aren't very good. So just watching these two become pros is what I'm excited about. I don't take anything from the foul at all."
There's no doubt that the Clark/Reese rivalry is putting the WNBA in the spotlight more than it has been in recent years. But as far as the league goes, the rivalry between Clark and Reese likely won't be a determining factor in who wins the WNBA Championship this season.
