A former Tennessee Vols standout was included this week on CBS Sports' list of the top 100 players in the NFL for the 2024 season.

Former Vols offensive lineman Trey Smith, a sixth round pick by the Kansas City Chiefs in the 2021 NFL Draft, is ranked by CBS Sports as the No. 90 overall player in the NFL.

From CBS Sports: He is a mauler in the run game who has improved in pass protection, which is a must in their offense. He helps form one of the best inside trios in the league with Joe Thuney and Creed Humphrey.

Smith was a terrific player for the Volunteers, earning First Team All-SEC honors in 2019 and 2020 (he was All-SEC Second Team as a true freshman in 2017).

The Jackson, TN native was rated as a five-star recruit coming out of high school and he was always viewed as a first round talent.

Smith, however, fell in the draft due to concerns over blood clots in his lungs that he dealt with while at Tennessee. The former Vol missed the final five games of his sophomore season due to the blood clots. Smith then played in every game during his junior and senior seasons. But despite staying healthy in 2019 and 2020, he was still viewed as a risky pick by NFL teams.

Kansas City's gamble paid off as Smith has developed into a key offensive lineman for the Chiefs. Smith has played in 50 games (with 50 starts) for the Chiefs since getting selected in the 2021 NFL Draft (he's also played in 10 playoff games for KC).

Smith is set to be a free agent after the 2024 season, giving the former Vol a chance to finally land the contract he deserves after playing on a "cheap" rookie deal for the first four years of his career.
