One of the most electrifying matchups in college football set for 2025 has been cancelled.
The Rebels were set to square off against the USC Trojans in a home-and-home series beginning next season. Unfortunately those plans are no longer as Ole Miss athletic director Keith Carter revealed the deflating news to Michael Katz of the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal on Tuesday.
Not only would this matchup have featured two of the best offensive minds in college football with Lane Kiffin and Lincoln Riley, but it also deprives college football fans of Kiffin's return to the University of Southern California.
Kiffin spent just over three seasons (2010-2013) as the head coach at USC where he accumulated a 28-15 record. The Trojans finished with a 7-6 record in 2012 which was a major letdown after USC was named preseason No. 1. Then, after a 3-2 start in 2013, USC fired Kiffin.
It's a shame that the football world won't get to see two of the most exhilarating teams in the country square off in a heavyweight non-conference bout. However, Ole Miss now has an opening on its schedule and could look to replace USC with another notable program in the near future.
